- Perseverance of the saints (one saved, always saved)
- Definition: True believers do fall into temptation and sin, but they will still be saved regardless of what they do.
- John 5:24 – Believe à everlasting life
- John 3:18 – Believes not à condemned
- Hebrews 3:12 – It is possible to go from believing to unbelieving.
- John 3:36
- I John 1:7
- Some proof (?) texts
- John 3:16
- John 3:36
- John 5:24
- Romans 8:29-30
- Romans 8:38-39
- John 10:28-29
- Problems with this doctrine:
- Denies the free will of man.
- Makes God a respecter of persons.
- Makes teaching others unnecessary.
- Passages that disprove perseverance of the saints:
- I Corinthians 9:27 – Paul didn’t want to be lost!
- I Corinthians 10:12 – Be careful, don’t fall!
- Galatians 5:4
- II Peter 2:20-21 – If you fall away, it is worse than before you first believed!
- The doctrine contradicts itself.
- You must believe to be saved, but then your belief doesn’t matter.
- Seeing that we who are saved can fall, it behooves us to examine ourselves daily to see if we are in the faith and always abound in the work of the Lord (I Corinthians 15:58).
