  • Luke 7:18
  • Luke 7:18-23 – John had already declared Jesus to be the one who was coming after him. It is possible John sent these disciples to ask this question for their benefit.
  • Luke 7:24-35 – Roles in service to God do not necessarily come with earthly glory.
  • Luke 7:36-50 – A woman anoints Jesus and washes His feet with her hair. Jesus teaches a parable showing that those who have been forgiven the most love the most.
  • Luke 8:1-3 – Compare Luke 9:58. Jesus did not have a lavish lifestyle.
  • Luke 8:4-15 – Parable of the sower (or the soils). Notice that no one understood the parable right away. Those who wanted to understand came and asked and learned the full meaning. It is important for us to work to be good soil. It is not enough for us to academically know God’s Word – we have to apply it and bear fruit.

  • The creed of the Lord’s church is inspired scripture.
    • The Nicene Creed could not have been the creed of the church in Paul’s day because it only came to exist more than 200 years after Paul.
  • All descriptive phrases for the church in the New Testament (church of Christ, assembly of God, Lord’s church, etc.) point ownership to God.

  • The system known as Calvinism dates back to Augustine, well before Calvin.
  • Calvinism is based on a misunderstanding of the sovereignty of God.
  • God has the power to save, but also the power and right to set the conditions for salvation.
  • Matthew 11:28-29
  • John Calvin endorsed the beliefs of Augustine and expanded on them. The five points of Calvinism were formed during the Synod of Dort in the 1618-1619.
  • Calvinism is based on the belief that God saves man without intervention from man. Sinners do not save themselves in any manner at all.
  • The Five Points
    • Total depravity: Born guilty of Adam’s sin; thus, totally inclined to evil, incapable of a good thought or deed.
    • Unconditional predestination: Being born incapable of a good thought, none could choose to be saved; therefore, God chose some to be saved.
    • Limited atonement: God chose some to be saved; some were not chosen, therefore Christ died only for the chosen ones.
    • Irresistible grace (direct operation of the Holy Spirit): God chose some to be saved and sent the Holy Spirit upon those He had chosen.
    • Perseverance of saints (once saved, always saved)
  • A logical system
    • Each step follows very logically.
  • Logical, but wrong!
    • Calvinism is a logical system that starts from an incorrect premise, namely that all people are themselves guilty of Adam’s sin. The Bible refutes this in many places. With this premise removed, the whole Calvinist system of belief collapses.

  • Weigh the consequences.
    • Proverbs 6:27-35 – You can’t escape the consequences.
    • Proverbs 8:19
    • Proverbs 1:32-33 – God’s wisdom provides a better way.
    • Proverbs 5:15-18
  • See the reality.
    • Proverbs 7:21-27 – We need to look past the temptation to see reality.
    • Proverbs 5:3-5 – Satan sells many lies with pretty packaging.
    • Proverbs 5:7-11 – Sin leads to years of wrongdoing.
    • Acts 5:8-10 – Ananias and Sapphira did not see the reality of their sin.
    • Matthew 26:14-16 – Judas did not see how horrible his sin was.
