  • Luke 18:1-43
  • Luke 18:1-8 – At all times we should pray and not lose heart.
    • Luke 18:7 – The elect are those who choose to follow God.
    • Luke 18:8 – It is not clear if this is part of the same conversation as Luke 17. It is hard to know if Jesus is referring to the destruction of Jerusalem or the end of the world. Either way, the point is that God will answer the prayers of those who are faithful if people will be faithful!
  • Luke 18:9-14 – We must be humble and exalt ourselves. With his comments here, Jesus is also cutting through bias and prejudice. The Pharisees carried an air of superiority.
  • Luke 18:15-17 – We must receive the kingdom of God like a child. He is primarily talking about their innocence, but this also shows that Jesus did not consider children to be guilty of inherited sin as some claim.
  • Luke 18:18-27 – The parable of the rich young ruler
    • Luke 18:22 - We are not instructed anywhere to give up all our wealth, so this was apparently a command specifically for this man.
    • Luke 18:25 – It is difficult to be wealthy and obey God. But nearly everyone in the United States is wealthy, relatively speaking! There are many examples in the Bible of wealthy people who obeyed God: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, David, Daniel, and others. It is possible!
  • Luke 18:28-30 – God will take care of those who follow Him. This may not necessarily involve earthly wealth, but God will take care of His own.
  • Luke 18:31-34 – The disciples again misunderstand a very straightforward statement from Jesus because of their ignorance. It is easy for us to do the same thing.
  • Luke 18:35-43 – Jesus heals a blind man. The man addressed Jesus with respect and persistence. See Mark 10:46-52.

  • Galatians 4:1-16
  • Galatians 4:1-7 – Through Christ, we have become sons of God, and heirs to the promise of salvation.
    • Galatians 4:6 – See Romans 8:15.
  • Galatians 4:8-11 – Paul is trying to get the Galatians to realize how much they were giving up to try to go back to the old law. They were giving up their relationship of son-ship with God.
    • Galatians 4:11 – See I Corinthians 3:11-15. The Galatians were Paul’s work. He did not want to lose them!
  • Galatians 4:15 – Some interpret this to mean that Paul had poor eyesight. This verse does not necessarily say that. Paul could have simply been indicating the great love they had shown him.

  • Matthew 19:3-6 – Jesus is asked a question about divorce, but Jesus answers with a principle about marriage. Gambling is not specifically addressed in the scriptures, but we do have principles that we can apply.
  • What’s not wrong:
    • Taking a chance
    • Playing games or rooting for a sports team. I Corinthians 10:27
  • What’s definitely wrong:
    • Compulsive gambling – I Corinthians 6:12
    • The problems that come from compulsive gambling
  • Two principles to consider:
    • The love of money is a root of all sorts of evil.
      • I Timothy 6:6-11
      • Ephesians 5:3-7
      • Colossians 3:5-6
      • Hebrews 13:5
      • Mark 4:18-19
      • Luke 12:25; 16:13-15
      • Ephesians 4:28
      • II Thessalonians 3:10
    • Love your neighbor as yourself.
      • Matthew 22:36-40
      • Romans 13:7-10
      • I Corinthians 10:24
    • Are you free from the love of money?
    • Are you loving your neighbor?

  • Luke 17:1-37
  • Luke 17:1-4 – We have an obligation to help other people avoid sin by not causing them to stumble and rebuking them to help them return to God is they do.
  • Luke 17:7-10 – We are entitled to nothing but a life in service to God. See Luke 9:23; 14:11; 18:13.
  • Luke 17:11-19 – Jesus cleanses ten lepers, but only one returns to thank Him.
    • What if we only had today what we thanked God for yesterday?
    • Keep things in perspective.
    • Be thankful for past blessings.
    • We have redemption through Christ. If nothing good happens to me the rest of my life, isn’t that enough?
  • Luke 17:20-21 – The kingdom of God was within them!
  • Luke 17:22-37 – This appears to be a prophecy about the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. Some interpret this to be at least partially talking about the second coming of Christ, but in comparison with other parallel passages, it seems to be wholly in reference to the destruction of Jerusalem. The apocalyptic language used here is used elsewhere in the Bible in reference to earthly battles and wars. See also Matthew 24; Mark 13; Luke 21.
    • Luke 17:33-34 – Those who would listen to the prophecy and get out would be saved. Those who try to stay behind and try to preserve their old life will be lost.
