  • Galatians 3:15-29
  • Galatians 3:18 – Our inheritance is based on the promise given to Abraham, not on the law. The Galatians were trying to go back to the old law, but Paul is trying to get them to see that it would not get them any closer to salvation.
  • Galatians 3:19 – God provided the law to define what sin was until Jesus came.
  • Galatians 3:20 – There was a mediator for the Old Covenant, but God was the only one involved when He brought His promise to pass in bringing Jesus. Here God is showing the superiority of Christ and the New Covenant over the Old Covenant.
  • Galatians 3:21-22 – The law and the promise were not contradictory. The law prepared the way for the promise to come.

  • Definition of gossip
  • Idle word – word that does nothing
  • Slander – oral communication of false statements
  • Matthew 12:36-37
  • Why is there so much gossip?
    • No preaching on it.
    • It is a rationalization of self-righteousness.
    • Gossips do not have the mentality for serious conversation.
  • Undoubtedly much evil is done
    • If someone tells something bad about you, I cannot possibly feel the same about both of you!
      • If I believe the tale, I will not feel the same about you.
      • If I do not believe the tale, I will not feel the same about the one who told it.
    • What good does it do?
      • The only time I need to report any actual evil of someone is when I’m seeking information as to how to help the person involved.
      • -or- when it will help somebody else. For example:
        • If I know someone is a poor credit risk.
        • Advising someone against associating with someone.
        • Reporting sin in the church (I Corinthians 1:11).

    • Am I helpful and encouraging, or a drag? Acts 18:23-28
  • What do I need to do right now?
    • Think about this.
    • Talk about this.
    • Do something about this.

  • Luke 16:1-31
  • Luke 16:1-13 – The parable of the unrighteous steward. God expects us to use our earthly goods wisely in serving Him. The steward was being fired but was still well spoken of by his master because of his shrewdness.
  • Luke 16:14-15 – The Pharisees scoffed because they loved money too much and Jesus rebuked them for it.
  • Luke 16:16-17 – See Hebrews 1:1-2; 2:1-4. Some claim that Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are part of the Old Covenant, but that is not true. Jesus is clearly stating that the gospel of the kingdom of God has now been preached.
  • Luke 16:18 – See Romans 7:1-4.
  • Luke 16:19-31 – The parable of the rich man and Lazarus.
    • There is a conscious existence beyond the grave (Luke 16:23-25).
    • You can’t change your eternal fate after death (Luke 16:25-26).
    • The Scripture is as capable of causing one to repent as one rising from the dead and delivering a message (Luke 16:31).
    • People know their fates as soon as they did, before Judgment Day (Luke 16:22-23).

  • Galatians 3:1-14
  • Galatians 3:1 – The word “foolish” here means, “having poor judgment.”
  • Galatians 3:2 – See II Corinthians 3. Spirit here most likely means the work of the Holy Spirit, i.e., the gospel. Many take the view that this is talking about the personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which conflicts with other passages.
  • Galatians 3:10 – Those who were trying to find salvation by keeping the law of Moses were under a curse because they could not keep the law perfectly. The blood of Christ allows us to be saved even though we have sinned. Jesus came to redeem us from the curse of the law. See Joel 2:32.
