  • Luke 24:7-53
  • Luke 24:6-7 – The Jews counted days from sunset to sunset and counted partial days as full days.
    • Acts 10:3, 9, 23-24 – Notice how days are counted in this account.
    • Matthew 27:63-64 – Seemingly different lengths of time are used interchangeably.
  • Luke 24:13-35 – Jesus appears to the two men on the road to Emmaus.
    • Luke 24:13-16, 31 – See Mark 16:12
    • Luke 24:18 – The events of Jesus’ death were evidently already widely known.
    • Imagine how many people these two men talked to. This shows the great importance of evangelism.
  • Luke 24:36-49 – Jesus appears in the midst of the apostles.
  • Luke 24:1, 13, 21, 46 – Some argue that Jesus arose on Saturday, not on Sunday (Sabbatarians). Luke’s account refutes this view completely.
  • Luke 24:43 – See I John 1:1-3; II Peter 1:16-18.
  • Luke 24:50-53 – This matches up exactly with the beginning of Acts. See Acts 1:1-11.

  • Luke 23:35-24:12
  • Luke 23:39-43 – Some argue that this passage about the thief on the cross means that we don’t need to be baptized to be saved. There are two issues with this line of reasoning:
    • No one was being baptized into Christ yet.
    • Even so, Jesus could do what He wanted to. He could have made an exception for the thief just as he forgave sins of others on the spot.
  • Luke 23:44-49 – Miracles accompanied the death of Jesus.
    • The veil of the temple was torn.
      • Hebrews 6:19-20 – Jesus entered the most holy place as a forerunner for us.
      • Hebrews 9:3, 7, 11-14
      • Hebrews 10:19-22
    • Earthquakes
    • Darkness
    • The dead are raised – Matthew 27:52
  • Luke 23:50-56 – Jesus is buried.
    • John 12:42 – Many believed in Jesus, but were too afraid of the Jews to follow Him.
    • Mark 15:43
  • Luke 24:1-12 – The resurrection
    • Luke 18:32-34 – The apostles did not understand the resurrection.
    • Matthew 18:13
    • Swoon theory: Jesus just swooned and did not really die.
      • This theory does not make sense for a number of reasons. Jesus would have at the very least been in critical condition and unable to survive the tomb while He was bleeding out for three days. It would have taken a miracle to survive this!
    • Importance of the resurrection: Philippians 3:5-11; I Thessalonians 1:10; I Peter 1:3
