  • Most of the qualifications for elders are qualifications for Christians in general.
  • Qualifications that are peculiar to elders:
    • Desiring the office - I Timothy 3:1. The office of elder or overseer is a good work.
    • Not a new convert to the faith – I Timothy 3:6
    • Apt to teach – I Timothy 3:2. All Christians should be able to teach others to some degree, but elders should be particularly capable in this area.
    • Able to convince those who oppose God – Titus 1:9
    • Husband of one wife – I Timothy 3:3
    • Wife must be of good character – I Timothy 3:11
    • Must rule his own house well. Children must believe and not be rebellious – I Timothy 3:4-5; Titus 1:6
      • It could be that a man has subordinate, well-mannered children, but it is clear that he had no part in raising them to be this way. In this case, the children do not act as a qualification for the man.

  • I Corinthians 16:1-4
  • Who?
    • I Corinthians 16:2 – Each of you. This is a personal responsibility before God.
    • I Corinthians 14:6 – We are all partaking in the things the church does, but we each have personal responsibility.
    • What if I don’t make much money?
      • II Corinthians 8:12 – Give according to what you have.
      • Mark 12:41-44 – This is under the Old Covenant, but shows Jesus’ attitude at the widow’s offering.
    • What?
      • 110% of what we have is God’s.
      • II Corinthians 8:7
      • We owe God everything. Just giving a lot does not fulfill our service to God.
    • When?
      • “upon the first day of the week”
      • Acts 2:44-45
    • Where?
      • How do we know this is a church collection? The context indicates that they were preparing funds to be sent as a collective action. The day they were told to give on also indicates it was a church collection since they would all be gathered on that day.
    • Why?
      • Philippians 4:17
      • Because of the fellowship we have with other Christians. Philippians 4:10, 14
      • II Corinthians 9:10
    • How?
      • II Corinthians 9:6-7
      • The question is not so much how much we are giving, but how we are giving.

  • Luke 22:61-23:34
  • Luke 22:61-62 – This is a good example of how we should react when we sin.
  • Luke 23:2 – These charges are all false. In their eyes, He was misleading the nation, but He was leading the nation correctly in God’s eyes. Jesus specifically told people they were to pay taxes (Luke 20:22-25). Jesus was a spiritual leader, not an earthly king. He often reminded His disciples of this.
  • Luke 23:22 – Three times Pilate declared Jesus to be innocent.
  • Luke 23:28-31 – Jesus prophecies about the coming destruction of Jerusalem. He is quoting from Hosea 10:8.
  • Luke 23:34 – Jesus shows His great depth of love in asking for forgiveness for those who were crucifying Him. See II Peter 3:9.
  • Luke 23:33 – The Greek was Kranion, Amaramaic: Golgotha, Latin: Calvarius.

  • Titus 1:5; Acts 14:23 – Churches did exist without elders and they had the same functions as those that did. However, churches in general function better with qualified elders.
  • Three things are necessary for a local church to appoint elders:
    • Men who meet the standard set by God
    • Men who are willing to take on the role and responsibilities
    • Men who are acceptable to the congregation
  • Some qualifications for elders are absolute and some are not.
  • There are several different words for the same role: Acts 20:17, 28; Titus 1:7; I Peter 5:2
    • Elders
    • Bishops
    • Shepherds (Ezekiel 34:1-10)
    • Overseers
  • Elders are limited in their function to the congregation over which they have been appointed.
