Introduction to the book

  • The author is the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 2:13-14)
    • John 14:26; 16:13
    • The Holy Spirit inspired men with the very words to speak.
  • The writer could be Paul, but it is difficult to tell for sure.
    • The Holy Spirit is the author, so determining the writer is not hugely important.
  • The letter was written from Rome to Hebrew Christians.
  • Hebrews 13:10

Overview of the book

  • Jesus is superior
    • Jesus is a better spokesman than the prophets.
    • Jesus has a better name than the prophets.
    • Jesus is a better builder than Moses.
    • Jesus gives a better rest than Joshua.
    • Jesus is a better high priest than Aaron.
  • A superior workman turns out a superior product. Thus, the New Covenant is superior to the Old Covenant.
  • Hebrews 8:6

Notes on the text

  • Hebrews 1:4-7
    • Jesus has a better position than the angels.
    • Judges 13:20; Genesis 3
  • Hebrews 1:8
    • Daniel 2:44; Hebrews 12:28
    • The kingdom of Jesus will never end.
    • I Corinthians 15:25-28
  • Hebrews 1:9
    • John 1:1; Colossians 1:16
  • Hebrews 1:13-14 – Some teach that all people have ministering angels that watch over them. This passage does not teach that, nor does it have anything to do with the functions of angels in the New Covenanent.

    • I Corinthians 1:12-15; II Corinthians 12:9-10

Wait

  • Matthew 4:1-11
    • Satan appealed to pride in every one of his temptations.
      • “If you are the Son of God…”
    • Jesus waited
      • He would miraculously create food on two recorded occasions – Matthew 14; Mark 6; Luke 9; Matthew 15; Mark 8
      • The angels did come and minister to Him (twice – here and in Gethsemane! Luke 22:43)
      • He reigns as king over all the world.
  • When is it hard to wait?
  • Alternatives to waiting with humility
    • Taking what we want now
