Luke 20
Luke 20:1-8 - The Pharisees try to trap Jesus
- This was a legitimate question, but it was asked with impure motives, which Jesus made clear by His response.
Luke 20:9-19 - Parable of the wicked tenants
- In this parable:
- Owner = God
- Vinegrowers = Israel
- Slaves of the owner = prophets
- Son of the owner = Jesus
Luke 20:20-40 - Jesus questioned about paying taxes and the resurrection
- Luke 20:37-38 - The Jews held only the Pentateuch to be authoritative, so Jesus gave them a counter-example from Exodus. This also shows just how carefully God expects us to read scripture!
Luke 20:41-44 - How was Jesus both David’s son and Lord?
- Jesus was David’s son by lineage, but Jesus is deity, thus David’s Lord.
- Luke 20:42 - This is quoting Psalms 110:1.
