- I Corinthians 7:17-38
- I Corinthians 7:19 – See Ephesians 2:8. There are two parts to man’s salvation. Providing the means for salvation is 100% up to God. Accepting salvation by obeying God is 100% up to man. See Luke 17:10.
- See Judges 7:2. God does not want man to think that salvation is his own doing.
- I Corinthians 7:23 – See Ephesians 1:7; Titus 3:5; Romans 1:16; Matthew 15:9.
- I Corinthians 7:24 – Some try to apply this verse too broadly and argue that you do not have to put aside sins you were already practicing when you became a Christian. This view contradicts I Corinthians 7:19 and Acts 3:26, as well as many other passages.
- I Corinthians 7:25-35 – Paul is giving advice in light of the persecution that was coming. He was not speaking against marriage. He was just saying that if they were not married, it would be better to remain that way with persecution on the way.
- I Corinthians 7:36-38 – There are different views on the meaning of this passage. Some think it is talking about a man’s own virginity. Some think it is talking about giving a man’s virgin daughter in marriage. Others think it is talking about a man marrying his betrothed. The ESV translation favors this third view.
