- Luke 23:35-24:12
- Luke 23:39-43 – Some argue that this passage about the thief on the cross means that we don’t need to be baptized to be saved. There are two issues with this line of reasoning:
- No one was being baptized into Christ yet.
- Even so, Jesus could do what He wanted to. He could have made an exception for the thief just as he forgave sins of others on the spot.
- Luke 23:44-49 – Miracles accompanied the death of Jesus.
- The veil of the temple was torn.
- Hebrews 6:19-20 – Jesus entered the most holy place as a forerunner for us.
- Hebrews 9:3, 7, 11-14
- Hebrews 10:19-22
- Earthquakes
- Darkness
- The dead are raised – Matthew 27:52
- The veil of the temple was torn.
- Luke 23:50-56 – Jesus is buried.
- John 12:42 – Many believed in Jesus, but were too afraid of the Jews to follow Him.
- Mark 15:43
- Luke 24:1-12 – The resurrection
- Luke 18:32-34 – The apostles did not understand the resurrection.
- Matthew 18:13
- Swoon theory: Jesus just swooned and did not really die.
- This theory does not make sense for a number of reasons. Jesus would have at the very least been in critical condition and unable to survive the tomb while He was bleeding out for three days. It would have taken a miracle to survive this!
- Importance of the resurrection: Philippians 3:5-11; I Thessalonians 1:10; I Peter 1:3
