• Lesson 4, continued:
    • Preach or teach the Word (Acts 20:7; 5:42)
      • The teacher
        • Obligated to please God, not man (Galatians 1:6-10; II Timothy 4:2-4)
        • Must preach truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), so as to be understood (I Corinthians 14:19), and with authority (Titus 2:15)
      • The listener
        • Must listen discerningly (Acts 17:11; Luke 8:18)
        • Listen not to prove self right, or the other wrong, but to learn truth.
        • Must obey and uphold truth (James 1:22-25)
        • Must reject and expose untruth (I Thessalonians 5:22; Acts 18:24-26)
      • Sing (Colossians 3:16; Ephesians 5:19)
        • Singing must be from the heart, instructive to others (Colossians 3:16), and in praise to God (Hebrews 2:12)
        • Vocal, not mechanical music is authorized
          • All passages in the New Testament that mention music in praise of God specify vocal; thus, there is no authority for mechanical instruments of music in praise of God.
          • Wrong to add to or take from things written (Revelation 22:18-19)
            • Wrong to add mechanical instrument in praise of God.
            • Wrong to take away the vocal, i.e., refuse to sing in the assembly.
