- I Peter 5:1 – No man is perfect and we cannot expect elders to be perfect either. Peter made plenty of mistakes, but grew into a qualified elder.
- Qualifications for elders:

- Above reproach as God’s steward – Titus 1:7. See I Corinthians 4:1,2; I Peter 4:10.
- Good reputation with those outside – I Timothy 3:7. See I Peter 4:4; Matthew 5:11
- Temperate – I Timothy 3:2
- Prudent – I Timothy 3:2; Titus 1:8. See also Titus 2:2,5.
- Self-controlled – Titus 1:8
- Respectable – I Timothy 3:2. See also I Timothy 2:9. Someone who lives a decent and orderly life.
- Gentle – I Timothy 3:3. See also Titus 3:2; James 3:17; I Peter 2:18; Psalm 86:5; II Corinthians 10:1-2.
