    • Our sould need a good diet and exercise just like our bodies do.
  • Join a local church and be active (Acts 2:41-47
    • God knows that we benefit from being around others who can encourage us in our service. The ideal place for a Christian on earth is in a local church.
    • Acts 9:26-28 - Paul joined a local church after his conversion.
    • A local church continually teaches and encourages.
  • Try to get others to obey like I have (Acts 9:19-20
    • Paul immediately started to proclaim Jesus was the Son of God after his conversion.
    • Those who were scattered because of the persecution were still able to spread the gospel.

    • Elders are servants of the congregation. They rule by serving.
  • Warning and admonishing (I Thessalonians 5:12-13
    • Acts 20:31 - Elders are to watch for the flock.
    • Ezekiel 3:17 - The important duties of a watchman.

    • Elders are to feed the flock the word of God. I Timothy 5:2

    • Elders are to lead by example and not try to force decisions on the congregation.
    • Matthew 23:8 - We are all brethren in God’s eyes.
  • Elders influence the congregation by their behavior and should not do things that they wouldn’t want anyone else to do.

  • The Old Testament was written between roughly 1500 B.C and 425 B.C.
  • The New Testament was written between roughly 4 A.D. and 90 A.D.
  • Asceticism - abstaining from physical pleasures in pursuance of spiritual goals. See Colossians 2:18-23.
  • Gnosticism - belief that matter is evil and spirit is good. Gnostics believed they had special knowledge that allowed them to be good. See I John 4:1-6
  • Docetism - belief that the body of Christ seemed real, but was an illusion.
  • Pseudepigrapha - Greek for “falsely attributed.” There were many books in the First Century that were falsely attributed to trusted authors.
  • I Timothy 5:18 as “Scripture.”
    • II Peter 3:15-16 - Peter refers to Paul’s letters as “Scripture.”
  • Origen of Alexandria
  • By the 4th Century A.D., the canon of the New Testament is firmly set.
  • We have over 5,000 manuscripts of the New Testament in Greek. The next closest writings are the Iliad and Odyssey. There are about 643 manuscripts of the Odyssey.
  • Uncial - A form of manuscript written in all capital letters with no spaces or punctuation. This form was used to aid in checking for errors in the text because all the letters would always line up.
  • Cursive - A form of manuscript written in standard form with spaces and punctuation.

  • God is to be the director in every phase of life, continued:
    • Economical (the business world)
      • Colossians 3:22-23 - Servants are to obey their masters and work heartily.
      • Titus 2:9-10 - Servants are to be submissive and work in good faith.
      • Colossians 4:1 - Masters are to treat servants fairly.
    • Social
      • Luke 10:30-35 - the parable of the good Samaritan
        • We are to have mercy and compassion on people in need.
        • This example deals with individuals - not churches.
      • Ephesians 4:28 - Work with your own hands to provide for yourself and those you have responsibility for.
      • Matthew 5:16 - Let your light shine before others.
    • Spiritual
      • Matthew 17:5 - God commands us to obey Jesus. Jesus is God’s spokesman.
        • Matthew 7:21-23
      • II Timothy 3:16-17 - Inspired scripture is profitable to man to make him complete and equipped for every good work.
      • II Peter 1:3
      • Jude 1:3 - The faith was delivered once for all to the saints.
  • God has the right to direct man’s life and He alone has the right to choose the directions.

  • Romans 12:2-3 - Do not be conformed to this world. Do not think more of yourself than you should.

  • I must regard others as more important than myself (Philippians 2:3-4
    • We have to be careful of the rampant self-promotion that exists in our culture.
    • Job 38:1-7 - We must remember how small we really are.
    • Proverbs 27:5-6 - Sometimes we need to hear criticism.
    • Self esteem is not the problem - self-control is.
    • Luke 17:3 - We need to be told what we are lacking.
  • I must work hard as a servant (Philippians 2:5-8
    • II Thessalonians 3:7-10 - We can not go along thinking we are just entitled to things.
    • Philippians 2:12-15
  • I must let God exalt me instead of exalting myself.
    • Luke 14:7-11 - Don’t exalt yourself.
    • Luke 18:9-14 - The tax collector showed humility in prayer.
    • I Corinthians 4:5 - We should wait and let God exalt us.
