  • The story of the Old Testament
    • Genesis 1 – Creation
      • Ecclesiastes 7:29 – Man chooses to do wrong even though God made him upright.

      • Ezekiel 18:20 – We do not inherit sin.
    • Within the first few chapters of the Bible, we have been introduced to the problem:
    • Genesis 12:1-7 – God makes 3 promises to Abraham
      • Nation – Old Testament
      • Land – Old Testament
      • Universal blessing
    • Genesis 50:26 – Joseph dies with the Israelites still in Egypt.
    • Exodus 12:37-40 – Israelites leave Egypt.
    • Deuteronomy 4:1 – Deuteronomy repeats the law and urges the Israelites to obey it this time.
    • Judges 2:8 – The next generation was not faithful. Judges are brought in to rule the people.
    • The Israelites desire a king. Saul, David, and Solomon are the first three kings, ruling for 40 years each (the united kingdom).
    • The Israelites fall into idolatry and the kingdom splits.
      • II Kings 17:5-6
      • The northern kingdom falls to Assyrian captivity in 721 B.C.
      • In 586 B.C., Judah falls and is taken into Babylonian captivity.
    • Ezra and Nehemiah: Israelites allowed to return to rebuild under Cyrus.
      • Nehemiah 9:1-3, 30-37
      • It is important to follow God’s law!
    • God shows us the need that mankind had for a system of salvation. The stage is set for that 3rd promise.

  • The story of the New Testament
    • Matthew 1:1, 17
    • John 1:1, 14-18 – John comes to prepare the way for Jesus.
    • Matthew 4:23
    • John 18:36 – Jesus was not the kind of earthly leader many were expecting.
    • Jesus rebukes the Pharisees, who were esteemed as religious leaders. This angers the authorities.
    • Matthew 27:50-54 – Finally the authorities are so angry that Jesus is crucified.
    • Matthew 10:4
    • Hebrews 9:22 – Bloodshed is required to atone for sin.
    • Acts 2:22-41 – Peter preaches the gospel for the first time, encouraging people to be baptized for forgiveness of their sins.
    • Colossians 2:14 – The Old Covenant is no longer in effect.
    • Ephesians 4:4 – Jesus is the head of one body.
    • Colossians 1:18 – This body is called the church.
    • Ephesians 5:23 – Jesus it the Savior of the one body.

    • Romans 14:12
    • Matthew 25:46 – Heaven awaits the obedient and Hell awaits the disobedient.

  • I Corinthians 14:11-19 – Paul is trying to put the spiritual gift of speaking in tongues in its proper context. The gift does no good if there is no one available to translate the message into a language understood by all who are present.
  • I Corinthians 14:20 – Be like children in forgiving and forgetting wrongs.
