  • Developing an attitude for Bible study
    • Why do we even need to study the Bible?
      • God chose to communicate His will to us in writing (Ephesians 3:1-6; I Timothy 2:4)
        • Jude 1:3; Galatians 1:6-9 – there is no revelation still to come! Everything we need is in the text.
      • We need to know God’s word so we can be disciples of Christ (John 8:31-32; 12:48).
      • Ignorance of God’s word has always been a problem (Hosea 4:6), and that problem continues today.
    • Bad attitudes and habits that get in the way
      • II Peter 3:14-18 – It is possible to misuse scripture.
      • Hypocrisy (Matthew 7:1-5; Romans 2:1ff)
        • We must apply the Bible to ourselves.
      • We cling to faulty, human traditions (Mark 7:1-13)
      • We reject good, Biblical traditions (I Corinthians 11:2; Acts 17:21)
      • The random approach (II Timothy 2:15)
      • We oversimplify (Mark 4:10-12; Luke 20:37; Acts 17:11)

    • Luke 22:19-20

  • What does the Lord’s Supper mean to you?
    • A communion
      • The bread – communion with the body of Christ
      • The fruit of the vine – communion with the blood of Christ
      • Since taken in the assembly, it is also communion with one another.
    • A proclamation
      • I Corinthians 11:26
      • Proclaims:
        • Jesus life and death
        • His mission – Luke 19:10
        • His kingdom has been established – Matthew 26:29
        • We are not under the Old Covenant – Matthew 26:28
        • That He has not come the second time

    • A memorial
      • The bread – memorial of His body
      • The fruit of the vine – memorial of His blood
      • To forget is one of the greatest dangers; thus, we need this memorial.
      • The bread and fruit of the vine are not representative; they are memorials.
    • An anticipation (I Corinthians 11:26)
      • “Till He come”
      • A reminder that He is coming
  • In view of this, how must we partake?
    • Discerningly - I Corinthians 11:29
    • Reverently
    • Regularly – Matthew 26:29; Acts 20:7
  • The prayer of thanks
    • When you are to offer thanks for the bread, be sure you offer thanks for the bread.
    • When you are to offer thanks for the fruit of the vine, be sure you offer thanks for the fruit of the vine.
    • Make the prayer to the point.
  • Is one pleasing to God when he/she …
    • Plans a trip on Sunday and misses the Supper?
    • Deliberately misses one Sunday, then takes the next Sunday without repenting?
    • Misses the Lord’s feast to prepare a feast for guests?
    • Deliberately misses the Supper on Sunday morning and then takes Sunday evening?
  • When we take the Supper, we are to look:
    • Upward
    • Inward
    • Outward
    • Backward
    • Forward
  • Who can commune with Christ in the Supper?
    • Those in His kingdom (Matthew 26:29)
    • Not all who were once baptized into Christ, but those who are living lives subject to Him.
  • When is the Supper to be taken?
    • Matthew 26:26-29; Acts 20:7 – The first day of the week, until Jesus comes.
