  • I Peter 3:1-15
  • I Peter 3:1-2 – Peter was just discussing submission before governments and masters. He continues the discussion with instruction for wives to be submissive to their husbands (Ephesians 5:22). This does not mean that women have a lesser role at all. Wives should live so that if their husbands are not Christians, their husbands will be won over by their good example (Matthew 5:16).
  • I Peter 3:3-4 – This is not an injunction against braiding hair and putting on jewelry. The inner person is much more important than the outward appearance of a person.
  • I Peter 3:6 – Sarah referred to Abraham as her lord in Genesis 18:12.
  • I Peter 3:7 – Husbands must understand and account for the needs of their wives.
    • “as with someone weaker” – husbands are to treat their wives as though they are weaker vessels. Treat them kindly and gently. This doesn’t necessarily mean the wife is in fact weaker.
  • I Peter 3:12 – Compare John 9:30-31.
  • I Peter 3:15 – Set Christ apart in your heart. If you do this, you will be able to give a defense for your faith.

  • I Peter 2:14-3:2
  • I Peter 2:16 – See Galatians 5:1-2. God set us free from sin through forgiveness of our sins so that we could be His servants.
  • I Peter 2:17
    • Love the brotherhood: This is the only place in the Bible where any sort of brotherhood action is commanded.
    • Fear God: This involves two types of fear:
      1. Reverence for God
      2. If we do not obey Him, we should be afraid of His punishment.
    • Honor the king: We are to honor the office of the ruler.
  • I Peter 2:24 – In what sense did Jesus bear our sins? See Leviticus 16:14-22. Just as the scapegoat bore the sins of the people, Jesus bore our sins on the cross. The difference is that Jesus needed only to bear our sins once for all time. The scapegoat ceremony had to be completed yearly. Compare Hebrews 10:1-10.
