  • I John 3:7-24
  • I John 3:6-10 – One who abides in God does not practice sin. He may sometimes fail and sin, but he does not continually practice sin. See Hebrews 2:14; Ephesians 4:8.
  • I John 3:11 – See John 13:4-5; I John 5:1. Love for God and love for brethren is the badge of discipleship.
  • I John 3:17 – The only exception to this is a brother who refuses to work. II Thessalonians 3:10.
  • I John 3:19-21 – Our conscience is not completely reliable as a guide. It is possible to sear your conscience so that it does not guide you correctly. You must use the word of God to train your conscience so that it will be a proper guide.
  • I John 3:24 – “Abide” here means to continue in. Those who keep God’s commandments continue in Him.

  • Ephesians 4:17-32
  • Ephesians 4:19 – These people had lost their conscience. They no longer had a sense of shame. See I John 2:20-21.
  • Ephesians 4:21 – “If” here is used in the sense of “since.” It is not a conditional.
  • Ephesians 4:22-24 – Compare Galatians 5:17.
  • Ephesians 4:27 – Compare Galatians 2:5.
  • Ephesians 4:29 – “Unwholesome words” here are those that do not edify. This may not necessarily be foul language. False doctrine and corrupt teaching would be included, though.
  • Ephesians 4:30 – See Hebrews 10:29. This seal indicates ownership.
  • Ephesians 4:31 – Don’t slip back into the old ways of sin!

  • I John 2:21-3:6
  • I John 2:22 – Whoever denies Jesus is an antichrist and a liar. One who claims to acknowledge God but denies Jesus is still an antichrist.
  • I John 2:24 – If we believe and obey, we abide in both the Father and the Son.
  • I John 2:26 – John was trying to shore up their faith, so they would not be led astray.
  • I John 2:27 – Everyone John was writing to had this anointing, so we know he did not mean spiritual gifts. As in I John 2:20-21, the anointing is the Word of God that they had received. That is what was teaching them.
  • I John 3:1 – See John 7:17; Titus 3:5. Salvation is a gift God freely bestows on us. We cannot earn it.
  • I John 3:6 – See I John 1:8-9; I John 3:8-9. One can practice righteousness even though he may sometimes fail and sin. Confessing those sins and repenting is involved in practicing righteousness.
