  • Luke 13:26 – Compare Matthew 7:22-23.
  • Luke 13:30 – Some who think they are right with God but were prideful and looked to themselves rather than God will be cast out. Those that are last are those that are poor in spirit (Matthew 5:3) and will be blessed by God.
  • Luke 13:35 – This could be referring to a future time when every knee will bow, and the people will finally accept Jesus’ message.
  • Luke 14:12-14 – It’s okay to swap dinners with friends, but don’t do it to the exclusion of caring for the lame and the blind.
  • Luke 14:16-24 – All those who were invited gave excuses, and all were bad. We must be careful not to make excuses to God. He will surely see right through them.

  • I Thessalonians 1:2-8 – The church at Thessalonica was a working church.

    • Paul remembered three things:

      • Their work of faith

      • Their labor of love

      • Their patience of hope

  • The cause of a working church:

    • I Thessalonians 1:2; 2:19; 3:13; 4:16-17; 5:23
  • The effect of a working church

    • A good church is made up of people that have faith, love, and hope.

    • The effect: I Thessalonians 1:6-7

      • People who follow Christ

      • People who sound forth the Word of Christ

  • Works that all can do

    • Develop yourself in the faith

  • Acts 11:19-12:25
  • Acts 11:19 – Antioch of Syria was one of two cities named Antioch mentioned in the New Testament. All three of Paul’s preaching trips started here and the first two ended here (Acts 13:1-2; 15:35-36; 18:22-23).
  • Acts 11:26 – See Acts 26:28. Agrippa uses the term “Christian” and Paul doesn’t take any offense. I Peter 4:16 indicates that this is an approved name for followers of Christ. Can people tell that I am a Christian?
  • Acts 11:27-30 – The brethren collected money and sent it to elders of the church to be helped. Notice that the money was specifically for relief of the saints and it was sent directly to the elders. There was no intermediary church involved. We see this same pattern in all cases of churches sending relief to needy saints.
  • Acts 12:2 – James was the first apostle to be martyred.
  • Acts 12:20-25 – Herod was smitten by God because of his pride.

  • Luke 12:22-13:21
  • Luke 12:22-34 – We must trust God. If we seek God’s kingdom, our other needs will be taken care of. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t work, but we should not put undue concern on physical things. Spiritual things are much more important.
  • Luke 12:35-40 – Be prepared! The way to be prepared is by setting your heart on spiritual things.
  • Luke 12:49 – See Jeremiah 23:29; Revelation 3:18. Jesus may be referring to God’s Word as fire that burns away the chaff and purifies His people. Jesus came to bring change and save sinners, not to destroy.
  • Luke 13:1-5 – Repent! Physical circumstances are no indication of where we stand with God. If we don’t repent, we will be no better off than anyone else.
  • Luke 13:18-21 – The kingdom of God is the rule of God. The rule of God can be preached and produce an abundance of fruit.
  • Luke 13:16 – Note that the infirmity was caused by Satan. Ultimately, all physical infirmities are caused by Satan.
