I Corinthians 10:23-11:1 – Meat and idolatry

  • I Corinthians 10:23 – Compare I Corinthians 6:12. Some translations add quotes here to indicate that Paul is responding to something someone else might.
  • I Corinthians 10:28-29 – The principal here is to not cause another to violate his conscience by making use of my own liberties. Compare I Corinthians 8:7-13.

I Corinthians 11:17-34 – The Lord’s Supper

  • I Corinthians 11:18 – Compare I Corinthians 1:10-11. He again brings up the divisions in the Corinthian church.
  • I Corinthians 11:20 – It’s possible to think we are worshipping correct, but completely miss the mark and fail to worship acceptably.
  • I Corinthians 11:21 – In this context, the drunkenness here may not be referring to intoxication.
  • I Corinthians 11:25-26 – The “cup” here is a metaphor, indicated by the fact that they were to “drink the cup.” Some try to take this literally and use only a single cup for everyone, but that is missing the figure of speech here.
  • I Corinthians 11:27-29 – It’s critical to partake of the Lord’s Supper correctly. To do so incorrectly is sinful. The manner in which we partake must be worthy. None of us are worthy of Jesus’ sacrifice itself.
  • I Corinthians 11:30 – Some had died because they incorrectly took the Lord’s Supper.
  • I Corinthians 11:34 – Eating to satisfy your hunger is not part of worship.
