  • Is Christ’s church the means or result of salvation?
  • “Church” refers to saved people
    • Ephesians 5:23,25-27; Hebrews 12:22-29
    • ekklesia = “called out ones” (group)
    • Collective noun
      • a team of players; a herd of cows
      • Ephesians 5:29-30; I Corinthians 12:27-28
      • “Church” refers to (collects) saved people.
    • The Bible uses “church” in several ways:
      • Universal sense – saved people everywhere
      • Local sense – saved people joined together in a certain area to do spiritual work.
      • Assembled sense
  • Be loyal to Christ, not the “church”
    • The church does not save. It is the saved.
    • Acts 2:4,11,14,36-38,41-47
    • People were first saved by Christ in Acts 2, and so the church began in Acts 2.
    • What do we mean when???
      • “He’s a church of Christ preacher”
      • “I’m church of Christ”
      • “Our family is church of Christ”
      • “I’m a church of Christ-er”
    • Those who follow Christ are called the “church.”
  • The church (universal) is composed of individual Christians, not local churches. (I Corinthians 12:27,13)
    • Acts 8:38; III John 1:10

  • Mark 6:30-44 – Jesus feeds five thousand men.
  • Mark 6:45-52 – Jesus walks on the water. See also Matthew 14:22-33; John 6:15-25.
  • Mark 6:53-56 – Jesus heals many at Gennesaret.
  • Mark 7:1-13 – Jesus rebukes the scribes and Pharisees for setting their tradition above God’s law.
    • Mark 7:11-13 – Many attempt to do the same thing today by trying to just contribute money for a cause rather than getting out and doing the work themselves.
  • Mark 7:14-23 – It’s not eating food that defiles a man – it’s what comes out of the heart.
  • Mark 7:24-30 – Jesus casts the demon out of the Syrophoenician woman’s daughter.

  • Matthew 16:13-20 – Jesus promises to give Peter the keys of the kingdom.
  • Philippians 1:1
  • Elders
    • Acts 14:23
    • This is the same role as bishops and overseers, which refer to different functions of the same role.
    • Elders are to lead. Hebrews 13:17; I Peter 5:3
    • Elders are to feed. I Peter 5:2-3
    • Elders are to watch for welfare of souls. Hebrews 13:17; I Peter 5:4
    • Elders are not bosses (I Peter 5:3); they are servants of the flock just as a shepherd is a servant of the sheep.
  • Saints
    • Members are to be careful that the elders lead aright and then follow that right lead. Hebrews 13:17
    • If elders do not lead aright, the members are not to follow, but to rebuke. (I Timothy 5:19-20)
  • Deacons
    • List of deacons and resposibilities at Benchley.

  • How do you start a church?
  • Teaching is what worked back then
    • Paul was teaching the word of God among them.
    • Acts 2:41-42 – The new Christians devoted themselves to teaching.
    • Result of the teaching: Acts 2:41,47; 4:4; 5:14; 6:7; 9:31; 11:21; 14:1; 16:5; 17:2; 18:8
  • Teaching is what will work today
    • I Corinthians 12:28 – God has appointed teachers in the church.
    • Hebrews 5:12; II Thessalonians 2:15
    • Preachers - I Timothy 4:11,13,16
    • Elders – I Timothy 3:2; 5:17
    • Members – II Timothy 2:2; Titus 2:3
  • … Yes, even for kids!
    • II timothy 1:5; 3:15 – Timothy grew up in Lystra, an idolatrous town.
    • Joshua 8:34-35 – Joshua reads God’s law to the whole assembly, including the women, children, and strangers.
  • Applications
    • Attend services
    • Do your Bible class lessons
    • Make your kids do their Bible class lessons
    • Teach a Bible class
    • Read your Bible at home
    • Discuss the Bible outside of services
