  • Hebrews 12:24 – See Hebrews 9:18-21.
  • Hebrews 12:25 – Do not refuse He who is speaking – God! See Hebrews 1:1-2.
  • Hebrews 12:26 – God will shake all created things, leaving only that which cannot be shaken.
  • Hebrews 13:1 – See I John 4:20; 5:1; John 13:35; Matthew 22:37-38. We must love our brethren. That includes making every effort to get along with each other!
  • Hebrews 13:3 – Remember those who have been imprisoned for Christ’s sake.

  • Genesis 2:18-24
  • Malachi 2:14 – God expects us to treat our wives as precious gifts.
  • The primary reason for marriage is companionship. Other things come with marriage, but that is the primary reason.
  • How does God-given authority work?
    • The husband is the head of the wife.
      • Genesis 3:16
      • I Corinthians 11:3, 7-9
      • I Timothy 2:13-14
    • The one with God-given authority must use it as God requires.
      • I Samuel 15:17-19, 26
      • Colossians 3:18-19
    • Bad leadership will encourage rebellion.
      • I Samuel 8:1-6
    • How is he told to lead? Ephesians 5:22-33
      • By sacrificing himself for the spiritual well-being of his wife.
      • With love
        • Matthew 20:26-28
        • John 13:12-14

  • I John 2:1-2 – the ideal is to not sin
    • We must strive for the ideal, but accept the reality that we will sometimes sin.
    • I John 2:10,8
    • Luke 13:24 – We cannot lackadaisically strive for God.
    • God created man in the ideal state in the Garden of Eden. Man did not live up to the ideal.
  • God’s ideal for all mankind as opposed to that which is real
    • I Timothy 2:2; Titus 2:11; Hebrews 2:9; John 3:16
    • God wants all to be saved. Matthew 7:13-14
    • Ephesians 2:10
    • The reality is that only a few will be saved.
  • God’s ideal for husband and wife as opposed to that which is real.
    • Genesis 2:18
    • The ideal is that marriages will not end in divorce.
    • Husbands and wives should work toward being the best mates they can be.
    • The ideal husband will love and care for his wife and be faithful to her. He must spend time with her.
    • The ideal wife will love and care for her husband.
  • God’s ideal for saved people as opposed to that which is real
    • God wants all to serve him, study, teach others, and care for their fellow man. The reality is that all will not reach this ideal, but we must strive to reach it.

  • Ignore Genesis 2:24
    • A marriage starts a new family. Relationships must change.
    • Ephesians 5:22, 28-30, 33 – Husbands and wives have specific roles to play.
    • Ephesians 6:1-4; Matthew 15:1-6 – Honoring your parents changes meaning at different stages of life.
    • It is always sinful to gossip! Proverbs 11:13; 16:28
  • Pick a favorite child
    • Genesis 25:28; 37:3-4, 18-34 – Jacob’s partiality for Joseph engendered much hatred from the other sons.
    • Genesis 42:1-4 – Jacob shows favoritism again!
    • James 2:9
    • Ephesians 6:4; Titus 2:4
    • Romans 2:11
  • Cultivate jealousy in your marriage.
    • Genesis 29:16-20, 30-35; 31:1-20 – Jealousy between Rachel and Leah
    • Genesis 33:1-2 – Jacob again shows favoritism among his family.
    • Proverbs 5:15
    • I Corinthians 7:1-5 – Husbands and wives are obligated to each other.

  • Hebrews 12:5-24
  • Hebrews 12:8 – If your father does not discipline you when necessary, he is treating you as though you are no son at all.
  • Hebrews 12:11 – See also I Corinthians 11:32.
  • Hebrews 12:14 – We are to be at peace with all men, but not to the point of disobeying God. See Acts 4:29; 5:19. Peace based upon error is much worse than strife based on truth.
  • Hebrews 12:15 – See Jeremiah 48:10. We must do the work of the Lord diligently.
  • Hebrews 12:16 – If we put earthly things ahead of God, we are acting even more foolishly than Esau in selling his birthright for food.
