  • II Timothy 3:1-17
  • II Timothy 3:7 – See I Timothy 6:20-21; Acts 17:21. This could have been aimed at the Gnostics.
  • II Timothy 3:8 – See Exodus 7:11. Jannes and Jambres are not referred to elsewhere in the Bible, but rabbinic tradition from other sources indicate that these were some of the magicians who opposed Moses.
  • II Timothy 3:1-9 - “avoid such men as these”
    • Failure to love God
    • Failure to love others
  • II Timothy 3:10-12 – Timothy had experienced quite a lot in his travels with Paul, including conversions, miracles, beatings, and imprisonments.
    • See I Corinthians 4:17; 16:10; Philippians 2:19; I Thessalonians 3:2,6; Hebrews 13:23 – Timothy was often dispatched to work in different places.
  • II Timothy 3:15 – It is critical that children be taught to read and study the scripture from an early age.

  • II Timothy 3:17 – This is specifically referring to a man teaching the word of God. The word of God equips him to do everything he needs to do.

  • Hebrews 2:15-4:3
  • Hebrews 2:17 – Under the Old Covenant, the high priest was an Israelite and served as a man. In a similar sense, Jesus came to earth and lived as a man among brethren so that He might serve as our high priest.
  • Hebrews 3:1 – Jesus is called the Apostle here. “Apostle” means one chosen and sent. Jesus was an apostle in that sense, but not like the twelve apostles.
  • Hebrews 4:3 – God’s plan of salvation was set in place from the beginning of the world. See Matthew 25:34.
