  • I John 2:1-2 – the ideal is to not sin
    • We must strive for the ideal, but accept the reality that we will sometimes sin.
    • I John 2:10,8
    • Luke 13:24 – We cannot lackadaisically strive for God.
    • God created man in the ideal state in the Garden of Eden. Man did not live up to the ideal.
  • God’s ideal for all mankind as opposed to that which is real
    • I Timothy 2:2; Titus 2:11; Hebrews 2:9; John 3:16
    • God wants all to be saved. Matthew 7:13-14
    • Ephesians 2:10
    • The reality is that only a few will be saved.
  • God’s ideal for husband and wife as opposed to that which is real.

    • The ideal is that marriages will not end in divorce.
    • Husbands and wives should work toward being the best mates they can be.
    • The ideal husband will love and care for his wife and be faithful to her. He must spend time with her.
    • The ideal wife will love and care for her husband.
  • God’s ideal for saved people as opposed to that which is real
    • God wants all to serve him, study, teach others, and care for their fellow man. The reality is that all will not reach this ideal, but we must strive to reach it.

  • Ignore Genesis 2:24
    • A marriage starts a new family. Relationships must change.
    • Ephesians 5:22, 28-30, 33 – Husbands and wives have specific roles to play.
    • Ephesians 6:1-4; Matthew 15:1-6 – Honoring your parents changes meaning at different stages of life.
    • It is always sinful to gossip! Proverbs 11:13; 16:28
  • Pick a favorite child
    • Genesis 25:28; 37:3-4, 18-34 – Jacob’s partiality for Joseph engendered much hatred from the other sons.
    • Genesis 42:1-4 – Jacob shows favoritism again!

  • Cultivate jealousy in your marriage.

  • Hebrews 12:5-24
  • Hebrews 12:8 – If your father does not discipline you when necessary, he is treating you as though you are no son at all.
  • Hebrews 12:11 – See also I Corinthians 11:32.
  • Hebrews 12:14 – We are to be at peace with all men, but not to the point of disobeying God. See Acts 4:29; 5:19. Peace based upon error is much worse than strife based on truth.
  • Hebrews 12:15 – See Jeremiah 48:10. We must do the work of the Lord diligently.
  • Hebrews 12:16 – If we put earthly things ahead of God, we are acting even more foolishly than Esau in selling his birthright for food.

  • Qualifications for elders, continued:
    • Having children who believe – Titus 1:6
      • Once children leave the house and are out from under the direction of the parent, in general their behavior is their own responsibility as long as they were on a righteous path when they left the house. Also, note that God “parented” the Israelites in the Old Testament and they certainly did not all turn out faithful.
      • Must a man have multiple children?
        • I don’t think this verse is saying this. In this case, I think the plural includes the singular.
      • Does “believe” here mean “faithful Christians” or “trustworthy?” The Greek word can be translated either way. The context seems to be talking about the relationship between the child and the man, not between the child and God. This leads to the conclusion that the verse is referring to children who are under control of their father and not rebellious – not necessarily Christians.
