  • Hebrews 11:32-12:6
  • Hebrews 11:39 – These faithful people did not receive approval from men but from God. They died looking forward to the promise of the coming of Christ.
  • Hebrews 12:1 – The great cloud of witnesses is the many faithful people mentioned in Hebrews 11. See also I Corinthians 9:25-27.
  • Hebrews 12:2 – Jesus is the beginner and “ender” of our faith. It is difficult for us to even imagine the physical, mental, and emotional pain Jesus endured on the cross.
  • Hebrews 12:5-6 – God disciplines and corrects us now through His word.

    • Holding fast the faithful word – Titus 1:9
      • Note that the stated purpose of this requirement is so the man will hold fast to sound doctrine and be able to defend it.
    • Able to teach – I Timothy 3:2
      • There is no specification about whether this has to be public or private teaching.
    • The husband of one wife – I Timothy 3:2; Titus 1:6

    • Manages his own household well – I Timothy 3:4-5

      • A man must be managing his household in such a manner that they respect him. How a man leads his family gives an idea of how he will tend to the church.

  • Hebrews 11:17 – Isaac was not Abraham’s only son – there was also Ishmael. “Only begotten son” here is referring to the preeminent position. Isaac was the only son Abraham had by Sarah, so in that sense he was the only son begotten of that relationship.
  • Hebrews 11:21 – See Genesis 48.
  • Hebrews 11:23 – See Exodus 2.

        • Designate a time
        • Decide on a plan
          • The classic: just pick it up and read it
          • Use a special daily reading Bible
          • Use a daily reading plan
