  • Luke 1:11-11:4
  • Luke 10:11-18 – Jesus expected those people who had heard the preaching and seen the miracles to believe and repent!
    • Luke 10:15 – See Luke 4:31-41. Jesus worked many miracles in Capernaum.
    • Luke 10:16 – These disciples were authoritative in their preaching because Jesus sent them.
  • Luke 10:17-20 – The disciples were to rejoice that their names were written in heaven.
    • Luke 10:18 – See Isaiah 14:12. In Isaiah, it is referring to the king of Babylon. “Falling from heaven” is a metaphor for falling from a place of power. The verse in Luke is not parallel to this verse. We do not have enough information to prove that Satan somehow fell from heaven. It could just be saying that when the disciples were casting out demons, Jesus could see that happening as though Satan was falling like lightning.
  • Luke 10:21-24 – Obeying God requires diligent work to seek out truth and obey it. God’s wisdom is often hidden from those of great intelligence.
  • Luke 10:25-37 – The parable of the good Samaritan. The lawyer tries to justify himself by asking who his neighbor is, but Jesus turns it around on him by telling him to be the neighbor to other people.
  • Luke 10:38-42 – Serving God must come first, even if other good works get pushed aside.
  • Luke 11:1-4 – The disciples saw Jesus praying and asked Him how they should pray. Jesus gives them an example of a good short prayer.
    • Luke 11:1 – See I Peter 2:12. We are to be examples of good behavior to others.

  • The purpose of local church membership, continued:
    • Each member has equal obligation in these things with all other members, according to ability.
      • One member is as obligated to attend all assemblies as another.
      • One member is as obligated to give as prospered as another.
      • One member is as obligated to restore the erring as another.
      • In short, each member is to serve in the assigned things to the extent of his ability.
    • Who is really in the local fellowship?
      • Those who have joined the disciples in a locality (Acts 9:26).
      • Those who have partnership in the things of Christ with other disciples in the local church.
      • Negatively: Those who cease to function in the local fellowship are failing in their purpose; thus, if such will not repent and go to work, there is no reason to consider them members of the local church.
    • Local church to control its fellowship:
      • Local church membership is dependent on two things:
        • The desire of a member to work and worship with a specific group of saints.
        • The willingness of the local church to have a member in its fellowship (Acts 9:26).
      • The local church can refuse one membership (Acts 9:26)
      • The local church can remove one from its fellowship (I Corinthians 5:4-5)
      • The local church is to control and keep its fellowship pure (I Corinthians 5:4-7)
    • Action of members toward one who has been refused fellowship:
      • Can have no spiritual fellowship with him; he is in darkness (II Corinthians 6:14-18)
      • Can have no company, social concourse, with him (II Thessalonians 3:14; I Corinthians 5:11)
      • The faithful are to admonish him as a brother, i.e., as you would a brother (II Thessalonians 3:15)

  • Perseverance of the saints (one saved, always saved)
    • Definition: True believers do fall into temptation and sin, but they will still be saved regardless of what they do.
    • John 5:24 – Believe à everlasting life
    • John 3:18 – Believes not à condemned
    • Hebrews 3:12 – It is possible to go from believing to unbelieving.
    • John 3:36
    • I John 1:7
    • Some proof (?) texts
      • John 3:16
      • John 3:36
      • John 5:24
      • Romans 8:29-30
      • Romans 8:38-39
      • John 10:28-29
    • Problems with this doctrine:
      • Denies the free will of man.
      • Makes God a respecter of persons.
      • Makes teaching others unnecessary.
    • Passages that disprove perseverance of the saints:
      • I Corinthians 9:27 – Paul didn’t want to be lost!
      • I Corinthians 10:12 – Be careful, don’t fall!
      • Galatians 5:4
      • II Peter 2:20-21 – If you fall away, it is worse than before you first believed!
    • The doctrine contradicts itself.
      • You must believe to be saved, but then your belief doesn’t matter.
    • Seeing that we who are saved can fall, it behooves us to examine ourselves daily to see if we are in the faith and always abound in the work of the Lord (I Corinthians 15:58).

  • II John 1:9
  • I Corinthians 14:23
  • Because we don’t have Bible authority for it.
    • II John 1:9 – We don’t want to go outside the teaching of Christ.
    • Galatians 1:8; Colossians 3:17
    • What local churches did in the New Testament
      • Churches provided for the teaching and preaching of the gospel.
        • Philippians 4:14-18
      • Churches provided for worship and spiritual edification.
        • I Corinthians 16:1-2; 14:26; 11:17-22, 33-34
      • Churches provided for needy Christians.
        • Acts 4:32-35; 6:1-4
        • See a pattern? Acts 2:44-45; 4:32-35; 6:1-3; 11:27-30; Romans 15:25-26; I Corinthians 16:1-3; II Corinthians 8, 9; I Timothy 5:16, 5
        • Were there no other needy people in Jerusalem – just Christians? There were, but that was outside the scope of the work of the church.
      • Because we have something better to offer!
        • Philippians 1:27 – This is what a church should be doing!
        • I Thessalonians 1:8
        • I Timothy 5:3-5, 16 – Churches are not to be distracted with lesser works. Families are obligated to help their own first.
        • Acts 6:2, 4
        • Individual Christians can and should be engaged in all kinds of good deeds! Luke 10:33-37; James 1:27
        • Jesus Himself helped so many people in both physical and spiritual ways, so why didn’t He authorize churches to help the world in physical ways? John 6:10-14, 24-35, 48-51. Jesus came to serve a greater purpose than feeding people.

  • Luke 9:28-10:16
  • Luke 9:28-36 – Jesus is transfigured. This must have greatly increased the faith of Peter, John, and James. See II Peter 1:16-18.
  • Luke 9:37-42 – Jesus casts out a demon that the disciples could not. See Matthew 17:20. The disciples did not have enough faith.
  • Luke 9:43-45 – The disciples again fail to understand what was going to happen to Jesus.
  • Luke 9:46-56 – The disciples argue about who is the greatest.
    • Luke 9:50 – See also Mark 9:38-40.
  • Luke 9:57-62 – Jesus could read hearts and did not accept excuses. What excuses could we possibly hope to use on the day of judgment?!
  • Luke 10:1-16 – Jesus sends out the 70 in pairs to teach.
    • Luke 10:1 – Some old manuscripts read 72 here. We cannot tell which one is correct, but either way it makes no doctrinal difference.
