• The letter was written by Paul, probably while he was imprisoned in Rome. (Ephesians 3:1,13; 4:1; 6:20)
• Paul at Ephesus:
  • Acts 18:18-22
    • Dropped off Priscilla and Aquila
    • Reasoned with the Jews (Acts 18:19)
  • Acts 19
    • Imparting of the Holy Spirit (Acts 19:1-6)
    • Paul performs miracles (Acts 19:11-20)
    • Paul confronts idol craftsmen (Acts 19:21-27)
    • Uproad: town clerk quiets the crowd (Acts 19:28-41)
  • Acts 20:17-38
    • Paul sends for Ephesian elders from Miletus.
    • Paul gives “farewell address” to elders (Acts 20:25).
    • Encourages strength (Acts 20:28-31)
• Paul’s purpose
  • Remind them of their calling in Christ (Ephesians 1-3)
  • Encourage them to walk as a Christian (Ephesians 4-6)

• Ephesians 1:5 – “Predestined” here means that God intended for us to be adopted as sons. There are still conditions we must meet for this to be true.

  • [Peripateo] – physically in the gospels except for Mark 7:5
  • Figuratively, signifying the whole round of activities of life
• Ephesians 2:2; 4:17
  • The condition of those outside of Christ based on their “walk”
    • Ephesians 2:1 – dead
    • Ephesians 2:3 – fulfilling own desire
    • I John 2:16 – Describes the “course” of Ephesians 2:2
  • To “walk” as others shows a self-determination
    • Proverbs 16:25 – There’s a way that seems right.
    • Judges 17:6; 21:25 – We are not to make our own decisions.
    • Matthew 15:9 – Not following doctrines of men.
    • Is our “walk” in accordance with God’s will, or our self-imposed righteousness?
    • Are you “walking” in hopelessness?
• Ephesians 2:10; 4:1
  • The condition of those who have made a change in their “walk” unto that ordained, and worthy.
    • Ephesians 2:8-9 – God’s grace recognized, and their own lack of power recognized.

  • Each day leads us closer to eternity.
  • Each day places us closer or further from God.
  • Each day we make a decision.
