  • Ezra 1 (roughly 538-537 BC)
  • Ezra 1:3 – Cyrus gave all the Jews an open opportunity to go back and rebuild the city.
  • Ezra 1:4 – The plunder from Nebuchadnezzar’s destruction of the temple would return with the exiles. This was a great blessing from God to help the operation get started.
  • Nehemiah 2:5-9,17-18 – God blesses Nehemiah in his return to Jerusalem as well.
  • Many times in the Old Testament, we have examples of God presenting people with big opportunities, but still requiring people to seize that opportunity.
    • Noah, the Israelites taking the promised land, the fall of Jericho (Johua 6:2,16,3-4,20)
  • If people do not seize the opportunities that God gives them, it is their own fault!
  • Ezra 1:11 – God made it possible for the materials to go back to Jerusalem, but Sheshbazzar was the agent that actually carried it out.
  • Haggai 1:12-15
  • God’s plan of salvation works in a similar way. He gives us the opportunity, but we must seize it! (Acts 2:38-41) God calls us through His gospel, but we have to answer that call. God does not call us in some miraculous way – the call comes through hearing God’s word recorded in the Bible.

James 5:1-15

  • James 5:1-6 – Warnings against misuse of riches and abuse of power gained through wealth.
  • James 5:9 – Do not grudge one another. Put others before yourself.
  • James 5:10 – We have many examples of prophets who endured, such as Elijah, Jeremiah, and Paul.
  • James 5:12 – Do not swear. Let your word be your bond. This i not an injuction against making an oath (such as before a judge and jury). It is simply saying that we should keep our word without others feeling the need to require an oath from us.
  • James 5:13-15 – “If he has committed sins” – see II Timothy 4:5; Romans 4:19; Hebrews 12:3; I Peter 2:24; John 6:2.
    • Being weak is not necessarily a sin.
    • Being weary is not necessarily a sin.
    • So here, sin is something other than being weak or weary.
    • So, if any suffer hardships, let him pray.
    • Is any weak, let him call for the elders.
    • The prayer of faith will save the weary.
    • If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
