  • Hebrews 5:12 – We must strive to study to get to the point that we can teach others and handle the more difficult parts of scripture. We must also put what we learn to use so that we will grow. Without study and use of the word, we will not grow.
  • Hebrews 6:1-2 – Jesse Jenkins takes the position that this is talking about putting aside the old covenant and studying the new law from God and obeying that.
  • Hebrews 6:3 – In context, this is referring to letting go of the old covenant. The phrase “if God permits” is referring to the people’s inclination to let go of the old law. We know from many other passages that this is what God wanted them to do.
  • Hebrews 6:4-6 – Once they had experienced the blessings of the new law, it is senseless to return to the old law. Once you have learned the new law and forsaken it, there is nothing left to bring you back to repentance.

  • I Corinthians 1:18-23 – The Jews had come up with their own idea of what Christ should be and when Jesus did not match their preconceived notions, they rejected Him. People have the same problem today when they assume they know what God’s posisiton is on a matter without studying to see what His position really is.
  • God doesn’t think like us! He is not obligated to acept our way of thinking.
  • Tradition is not a source of authority.
  • The teachings of men are not a source of authority. Matthew 15:7-9

Speaking in Tongues

  • Tongues were:
    • Real languages
      • Acts 2:1-11 – The apostles speak in tongues on the day of Pentecost. The tongues they were speaking in were real languages that people from other nations could understand immediately.
      • Acts 10:44-48 – The Gentiles were given the ability to speak in tongues.
      • Glossa (tongue) in Acts 2:4,11 and dialektos (language) in Acts 2:6,8 were used interchangeably.
      • I Corinthians 13:1-3 – Are the gongues of angels necessarily unintelligible? Also, the main point of this scripture is the importance of love. All these examples are hypothetical exaggerations.
    • To edify through understandable communication
    • Able to be controlled
    • Limited to the first century
      • I Corinthians 13:8-10 – Spirigual gifts would be done away with. What is the “perfect” that was coming? “Perfect” here is teleos, which means perfect in the sense of complete. Paul wrote this looking forward to the time when revelation would be complete – when the New Testament was complete. Spiritual gifts were present in the first century to show the authenticity of the word until revelation was complete.
  • Compare Biblical teaching with modern-day practices.
    • Is it a real language?
    • Is it edifying others in the assembly because it is understandable communication?
    • Is it controlled?
    • No modern day tongue-speaking is in the first century.

Hebrews 4:1-18

  • Hebrews 4:3-5 – See Ephesians 1:4. The writer emphasizes that those with an evil heart of unbelief will not enter God’s rest.
  • Hebrews 4:7 – The way to enter God’s rest is to hear God’s voice.
  • Hebrews 4:12 – The idea here is that the word of God is like a sword that is sharp enough to split the joints and able to pierce the marrow of man’s body. The joints and marrow are not really joined to begin with, so this verse is not saying that the joints will be separated from the marrow. God is able to see all the way through us. Nothing is secret to Him. See Hebrews 4:13 – “all things are open and laid bare”.
