Joseph and Providence

  • Genesis 45:1-7
  • Why is it that the story of Joseph occupies so much space in the text of the Bible?
  • Why doesn’t Joseph go back and see his father?
    • Joseph thought that he was forgotten by Jacob, not realizing that Jacob thought he was dead.  Genesis 44:18-34
  • How is it that God allowed the men who did such evil to Joseph to be heads of ten of the tribes of Israel?
    • He didn’t!  Living with what they did to Joseph and the lies they told to cover it up transformed them into honest men.
  • Why does God allow things to be the way they are in the world?
    • Some things are only understood by God.
  • God works in such a way as to make up for our faults.
  • What would heaven be if there were no suffering on earth?

Judge Not

  • Matthew 7:1-6
  • How to judge others:
    • We must examine ourselves.
    • We must have compassion.
    • We must realize we are dealing with family.
    • We must realize where we’ve come from.
    • We must remember that we’re in the business of restoration, not probation and annihilation.

  • Psalms 23:2
  • Hebrews 4:1,4-6,11 – God promises us rest.
  • Sheep require rest during the day.
  • Sheep will not rest if they are hungry.
  • Sheep will not rest if they are fearful.
  • Sheep will not rest if they are annoyed.
    • God gives us His word to comfort us.
  • Sheep will not rest when they are fighting.
  • Sometimes a shepherd has to force one of his flock to rest.

Lessons from Caleb

Benchley, June 21, 2010

  • Joshua 14:1-15 – Caleb is given Hebron as an inheritance.
  • Joshua 15:13-15 – Caleb takes the land of his inheritance.
  • Numbers 32:11 – God curses the Israelites to wander for forty years.
  • Deuteronomy 1:26-28 – The Israelites were terrified of the Canaanites.
  • The Israelites were concerned about the facts.  Joshua and Caleb were concerned about their faith.
  • Lessons from Caleb:
    • Sometimes, if we’re going to be like Caleb, we’re going to have to go against the flow.
    • Sometimes we’re going to have to accept God’s sovereign choice.
      • God chose Joshua to lead the people instead of Caleb.
    • Caleb embraced the promises of God.
    • Sometimes we have to tackle the tough turf.
      • No one else wanted Hebron – that’s where the giant Anakim were.
    • Caleb was a lifer.
      • He was not following God for the short term.
