- Within the first few chapters of the Bible, we have been introduced to the problem: sin.
- God makes three promises to Abraham (Genesis 12):
- Nation and land: fulfilled in Old Testament
- Universal blessing: fulfilled in New Testament
- Genesis 50; Exodus 12:37-40 – Israel grows as a nation in slavery to Egypt, and is then delivered from slavery by God.
- Leadership transfers from Moses to Joshua and then a series of judges.
- Israel requests a king and God gives them Saul.
- After Solomon, Israel splits into Israel and Judah.
- II Kings 17:5 – After 200 years of wicked kings and idolatry, Israel goes into Assyrian captivity (721 B.C.).
- Judah has a few good kings, but eventually goes into Babylonian captivity in 586 B.C.
- Israel is finally released from captivity and a remnant returns to restore Jerusalem. Nehemiah 9:1
- It is important to follow God’s law!
- God shows us the need that mankind had for a system of salvation. The stage is set for the fulfillment of the third promise.
- The story of the New Testament
- Hebrews 5:9 – Jesus is the source of eternal salvation.

- They must know it.
- They must love it supremely.
- They must hold it fast.
- They are to use it to encourage some and refute others.
- Shepherd, feed, tend the flock among them – I Peter 5:2
- The food is the word of God. Acts 20:28,32
- Restore the fallen.
- Protect from wolves.
- Materially relieve the indigent.
- Watch for the souls under their charge. Hebrews 13:17; Ezekiel 3:17; 34:1-10; Zechariah 11:17
- Oversee the flock. Acts 20:28; I Peter 5:1-3
- Group action requires oversight or leadership.
- Elders are God’s assigned overseers.
- They are to oversee the congregation in all its functions.
- It is interesting and profitable to notice that among the specified functions of elders, decision making is not listed.
- Yet we hear it prayed that elders make good decisions more than anything else.
